The Majority Leader of Parliament and a Member of Parliament(MP) for Suame Constituency Hon Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has sparked yet another controversy insisting Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin was adopted as Speaker of Parliament but never elected.

It could be recalled that there was a misunderstanding between the minority and majority MPs in parliament during the election of Speaker of Parliament on 6th January 2021 prior to the second term investiture of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Suame lawmaker on Kumasi-based Otec Fm Morning Show Nyansapo hosted by KODA and monitored by MyNewsGh.com explained that “We had an election in parliament and there was a misunderstanding. We counted t Mike Oquaye’s votes but we couldn’t count Alban Bagbin’s votes because of the misunderstanding”.

According to Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu “The whole election process was aborted and it was not concluded because of the confusion during the counting. We had some spoiled ballots”.

“We decided to have another election but because of the time to swear in President Akufo-Addo, we decided to adopt Bagbin as Speaker for the purposes of swearing in the MPs to pave way for the President swearing-in” Majority Leader explained.

“The plan was that after swearing in the MPs and President then we have the elections of Speaker in two weeks’ time but the minority MPs never agreed. In consultation with NPP Leaders, we agreed to adopt Bagbin as the Speaker of Parliament”

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu explained, “Bagbin is not elected Speaker of Parliament because the Speaker election was not concluded though we agreed to give the position to him”.

He explained “I have nothing against Bagbin and I don’t hate him though we have our differences we are still friends as we used to be”
